At the senate plenary session, Senator Ogoshi Onawo, PDP, Nasarawa State has criticised the hasty passage of sensitive bills. The senator who voiced his concern about the haste with which they are instructed to enact laws, particularly those that deal with money urged the senate president to do better as the situation is not good for the country.
Senator Onawo emphasised his misgivings as regards the matter, citing the need for more time to review sensitive bills before they are passed.
Speaking to the senate president, Godswill Akpabio, senator Onawo said in part, “Since we started this senate, you said it’s a corrective senate, we have been ambushed all the time that very sensitive bills are brought and are expected to be passed with the speed of light, which is not good for this country.
“Every senator here is supposed to be adequately informed; he does his research, comes to the floor, and makes a positive contribution. But in a situation where even money bills are brought and we are expected to pass them within 2 hours, it doesn’t make sense; it doesn’t go well for this country,” he added.
The senator also implored the incumbent senate president to look into the situation, as history, according to Senator Ogoshi, “is going to judge you that things like this are not good for this country.”
