After Protests, Postponement, Senegal Fixes March 24 for Presidential Election

Senegalese government has declared March 24, 2024, as the revised date for the country’s presidential election.

The government made this announcement through an official communiqué released after a Council of Ministers meeting on Wednesday.

This decision comes after President Macky Sall, facing term limits, initially announced a 10-month postponement in early February, triggering widespread opposition protests.

The postponement had previously fueled unrest, with opposition demonstrations filling the streets, emphasising the significance and urgency of finalizing the election schedule.

The Constitutional Council, Senegal’s highest election authority, swiftly rejected the president’s move, instructing the government to promptly establish a new election date.

In response to these directives, the Council of Ministers convened to address the matter.

Government spokesperson Abdou Karim Fofana, in the released statement, conveyed the President’s decision, stating, “The President of the Republic informed the Council of Ministers of the setting of the date of the presidential election for Sunday, March 24, 2024.”
