In a dramatic La Liga clash on Sunday, former Real Madrid and Spain defender Sergio Ramos earned his 29th career red card as Sevilla suffered a 2-1 defeat against Real Sociedad.
The 37-year-old was given his marching orders in the 88th minute for a sliding tackle on Brais Mendez.
Ramos, extending his own record, now holds the dubious distinction of having the most red cards in La Liga history, with a total of 21.
Adding to the intrigue, Sevilla’s 38-year-old winger, Jesus Navas, received his first-ever red card in a La Liga match for protesting against the decision.
The match saw a series of events unfold, with Ramos receiving a yellow card in the 82nd minute, followed by a second yellow just six minutes later.
The referee, upon reviewing the pitchside monitor, upgraded the second yellow to a straight red.
Real Sociedad seized the lead with an early own goal by Sevilla goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic, and Umar Sadiq extended the advantage with a remarkable 25-yard strike.
Youssef En-Nesyri managed to pull one back for Sevilla with a deflected header, and he came close to equalizing when his powerful shot struck the post.
Ramos, who rejoined his hometown club in the summer, received his first red card since returning.
The result leaves Sevilla in a challenging position, having gone seven league games without a win and sliding to 15th in the table, while Real Sociedad climbed to fifth place.
