The removal of Philip Shaibu as Edo State’s deputy governor has sparked controversy and condemnation from various quarters. The Conference of Registered Political Parties (CRPP) Chairman in Edo State, Samson Isibor, voiced disappointment, labeling Shaibu’s impeachment as illegal and contrary to the desires of Edo people.
Isibor criticized the Chief Judge of the state, Daniel Okungbowa, for hastily appointing a panel to investigate allegations against Shaibu, implying bias in the process. He asserted, “The impeachment of the deputy governor is illegal and should not be allowed to stay.”
Regarding Shaibu’s absence at the panel, Isibor remarked, “If he appeared at the panel, that showed he agreed with what they are doing.” He emphasized the speed of the proceedings, suggesting predetermined outcomes.
Udoh Oberaifo of the Africa Action Congress echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the impeachment’s continuation despite pending legal action at the Federal High Court. Oberaifo criticized the new deputy governor’s alleged membership in another party, stating, “This action is in clear violation of the Electoral Act 2022.”
Both Isibor and Oberaifo condemned what they perceived as political manoeuvring and warned against entrenched godfatherism in Edo politics.
