In a show of interfaith solidarity, the Shi’ite Islamic group attended a Christmas service at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Samaru, Zaria, Kaduna State, on Monday. This was done to foster unity and religious harmony between different faith groups.
Isah-Hassan Mshelgaru, the leader of the Shi’ite group, stated that they recognize Christmas as a day of celebration, camaraderie, and unity. He further explained that their participation in the Christmas celebrations alongside Christians was aimed at fostering a sense of divine unity among Muslims and followers of other religions.
Mr. Mshelgaru emphasized that the group’s Christmas visit to the church was intended to bolster the bond between the two religious communities. He pointed out that Islam and Christianity are respected religions, with over 90% of Nigeria’s population identifying as followers of these faiths. He said, “When other faithful unite with the two faith groups, it means the whole of Nigeria is united.”

Reflecting on the impact of these visits, Mr. Mshelgaru revealed that the group began visiting churches over 25 years ago, which has led to an enhanced understanding between the Shi’ites and Christians. “The visit has reduced the fears and some animosities between the two faith groups.
They (Christians) are now open to us; we share sentiments and problems. The regular exchange of visits has bridged the gaps between us,” he added.
Earlier, the parish priest, Isak Augustine, praised the Shi’ite group for their visit and encouraged them to continue these visits to promote religious harmony and unity. He offered prayers for divine peace to descend upon Nigeria and alleviate the country’s numerous socio-economic issues.
As a token of goodwill, the Shi’ite group presented gifts to the Catholic church.
