The United States has called for an end to direct military exchanges between Israel and Iran following a series of Israeli strikes on Iranian targets.
According to a senior U.S. administration official, the recent Israeli attacks were aimed at military targets in Iran and were conducted with “extensive” and “precise” strikes.
The official, speaking late on Friday, noted that the operation was intended to deter future Iranian attacks and reduce Iran’s capacity to launch further assaults.
According to Reuters, he stated, “The effect was a proportionate self-defence response. The effect is to deter future attacks and to degrade Iran’s abilities to launch future attacks.”
The official emphasized that the U.S. did not participate in the strikes but coordinated with Israel to ensure the operation was low-risk and avoided civilian harm.
The U.S. official underscored that this latest exchange should mark the conclusion of direct military engagements between Israel and Iran, referencing a similar incident in April that was subsequently “closed off” after hostilities ceased.
“This should be the end of the direct military exchange between Israel and Iran – we had a direct exchange in April and that was closed off and now we’ve had this direct exchange again,” he added.
