Nigerian Soldier Kills Wife, Takes His Own Life

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of one of its soldier, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, who shot his wife before taking his own life at the Wawa Cantonment in Niger State.

According to a statement by Capt. Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, the tragic incident occurred on October 11 at the 221 Battalion quarters within the cantonment.

Nwankwo explained that the soldier had earlier sought permission to attend to personal matters but failed to return to duty. When colleagues went to check on him, they found the lifeless bodies of Femi and his wife in their apartment.

“The corpses have been evacuated and deposited at the hospital morgue while an investigation has commenced to determine the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident,” the statement read.

Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, described the incident as sad and regrettable. He assured that the outcome of the investigation would be made public and urged personnel to seek help when facing emotional or domestic challenges.

The Army extended condolences to the families of the deceased couple and reiterated its commitment to the welfare and mental well-being of its officers and soldiers.
