Soldiers Shot by Gunmen in Niger State

In the early hours of Monday, gunmen attacked a military base in Tegina, Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State, resulting in the shooting of two soldiers and the death of a suspected bandit leader. The incident, confirmed by the chairman of Rafi LGA, Alhaji Ayuba Usman Katako, has added to the security challenges faced by the state.

The attackers initially planned to rustle cattle in Mashegu and Wushishi local government areas but diverted their attention to the military base in Tegina. This led to a gunfight between the bandits and military personnel. During the exchange, two soldiers were shot and are currently receiving treatment at IBB Specialist Hospital in Minna.

One of the bandits, suspected to be their leader, was killed in the shootout. Alhaji Ayuba Usman Katako praised the efforts of the military, police, and vigilantes, stating, “The military, police, and vigilantes are trying their best in the state to ensure peace and security of lives and properties and therefore deserve to be commended by Nigerians.”

He called for more patience, support, and prayers from the people to help overcome the security issues in the state and Nigeria as a whole. Despite efforts to reach the military for comments, no response was obtained at the time of this report.
