Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has declared that the people of the South-West will not back the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections due to the hardship the party has caused Nigerians.
As the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the region, Makinde emphasized that the South-West would never be “captured” by the APC, as the people have grown more discerning.
This statement comes in response to comments made by APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, who, during a stakeholders’ meeting aimed at reconciling internal party disputes, expressed confidence that the APC would secure the South-West for Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Similarly, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, while campaigning in Ese Odo LGA, claimed that the PDP was no longer a viable force in Ondo State, as many opposition leaders had returned to the APC.
In what appeared to be a direct rebuttal to both Ganduje and Aiyedatiwa, Makinde insisted that the PDP still holds strong influence in the South-West and that the APC national chairman would be surprised by the region’s support for the opposition in the upcoming elections.

“If wishes were horses, everybody would be riding it. I can tell you that the people of the South-West of Nigeria are wiser and especially in Ondo State. On November 16, they will tell him (Ganduje) that Ondo State and indeed South-West is for the PDP,” he said on Thursday during a campaign in Ondo State.
Mr Makinde added, “Talk, they say is cheap. You can say whatever you like with your mouth but the people of Ondo State, they will speak loud and clear on November 16, 2024 and then all of us in this country will hear it loud and clear.”
Earlier, the PDP candidate, Mr Agboola Ajayi, welcomed some defectors from both the APC and the Labour party, pleading with them to urge their supporters to vote for PDP in the election.
