“Nationwide Protest Will Start in Abuja,” Says Sowore, Challenges Wike’s Protest Ban in FCT

Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has challenged the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, regarding his statement that protests in Abuja are not permitted on August 1.

In a social media post on Friday, Sowore announced that the planned nationwide protests will indeed begin in Abuja.

He said, “It is starting from and in Abuja!”

This comes after Wike’s declaration that August 1 has been reserved for the chairmen of the six Area Councils of the FCT to present certificates of recognition to traditional rulers, effectively banning protests on that day.

The minister’s warning came after the FCT Security Council meeting in Abuja on Thursday, during which he briefed journalists on the outcome.

The planned nationwide protests, under the hashtag #EndBadGovernance, are scheduled to occur from August 1 to 10, 2024. The organizers have voiced concerns over the prevailing hunger and rising inflation in the country.
