PDP Won’t Collapse Despite Politicians Decamping to APC, Other Parties – Sowunmi

Amid rising concerns over defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), party chieftain Segun Sowunmi has dismissed fears about the party’s future, insisting it remains solid and ready for the next electoral cycle.

In an interview, Sowunmi questioned the anxiety surrounding the departures. “Why will the PDP not survive?” he asked, noting that political movements are normal in a multiparty democracy.

He argued that while some PDP members have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), others have joined the PDP and other parties as well. He pointed out that no single party can accommodate all political ambitions.

“The presidency of Nigeria is only one ticket in a party. So all the people that want to be president, can they contest president under APC? The answer is no. In the 36 states, there’s only one gubernatorial ticket. All the people that want to be governor in all the 36 states in the country, can they get a ticket under APC? The answer is no,” Sowunmi said.

He described the defections as premature political moves, adding “It’s too early in the day for anybody to be saying this person cannot go, this person will go.”

Sowunmi expressed confidence in the PDP’s organisational strength, saying “Almost all the state structures are in place. The party has also done well at local government level, almost all the local government structures are intact.” He dismissed claims that governors have total control over votes in their states.
