Stampede in Nigeria: A Tragedy of Selective Justice

The recent stampede in Nigeria, which resulted in the loss of numerous lives, has once again brought to the forefront the issue of selective justice in the country.

While the authorities have arrested some individuals in connection with the tragedy, it is disturbing to note that others, particularly those with influence and power, have been left untouched.

The stampede, which occurred during a charity event organised by the Obi Jackson Foundation, was a devastating reminder of the consequences of negligence and greed. However, the response of the authorities has been equally troubling.

While some individuals have been arrested and charged in connection with the tragedy, others, including the leadership of the Obi Jackson Foundation, have been spared.

This selective arrest raises serious questions about the fairness and impartiality of our justice system. Why have some individuals been held accountable while others, who may have had equally significant connection with the tragedy, have been let off the hook?

Is it because of their influence, wealth, or connections? These are questions that demand answers, and it is the responsibility of the authorities to provide them.

The selective arrest is not only unjust but also undermines the public’s trust in the justice system. It creates a perception that there are two sets of laws in Nigeria: one for the powerful and influential, and another for the ordinary citizens.

This perception can have far-reaching consequences, including erosion of public confidence in the government and the justice system.

It is imperative that the authorities take immediate action to address this selective justice. The leadership of the Obi Jackson Foundation, including Chief Ernest Obiejesi, must be held accountable just like his Ibadan counterparts.

The authorities must also ensure that all individuals responsible for the stampede are arrested and charged, regardless of their influence or connections. What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. No Nigerian is above the law.

The stampede in Nigeria is a tragedy that could have been prevented. The selective arrest of individuals responsible for the tragedy is a miscarriage of justice that undermines the public’s trust in the justice system. It is imperative that the authorities take immediate action to address this selective justice and ensure that all individuals responsible for the tragedy are held accountable.

But the problem goes beyond individual accountability. The root cause of these stampedes is the crippling poverty and hardship that plagues our nation.

The authorities must address these underlying issues by providing sustainable solutions to alleviate poverty and improve living, thereby preventing such tragedies from occurring in the future.

We, as a society, must demand more from our leaders and the powerful elite. We must hold them accountable for their actions and ensure that justice is served. The families of the victims deserve nothing less. Eureka!
