Widespread Hunger: Stampedes at Palliative Distributions in Abuja, Anambra Leave Many Dead, Including Children

A stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, has resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 10 people, including seven children.

The incident occurred this morning as thousands of residents from nearby communities scrambled to collect palliative distributions organized by the church.

Eyewitness accounts reveal that the chaos unfolded between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM, with some individuals having arrived as early as 4:00 AM to secure their share of the relief materials. The surge of the crowd, estimated to be over 3,000 people, led to the deadly stampede.

Padre Mike Nsikak Umoh, National Director of Social Communications at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, confirmed the incident while acknowledging that details are still emerging.

This follows the tragic incident in Ibadan, Oyo State, where 32 children died in a stampede during a children’s carnival. The event, intended to distribute free food and N5,000 cash to 5,000 participants, descended into chaos due to overcrowding and inadequate planning.
