Akpabio – Nigeria’s Free Food Stampedes in 2024 Were Natural Disasters, Not Man-Made

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said that stampedes that occurred over free food cross the country in 2024 were natural disasters.

“These were unavoidable circumstances, Not man-made but almost natural disasters. Please accept our sympathies,” said Mr Akpabio during a visit to Bola Tinubu in Lagos.

He added, “Please accept our sympathies on the stampede that took away our very young children in Ibadan and other places in Anambra. It was not limited to one location.

In December 2024, fatal stampedes at rice distribution sites in Ibadan, Anambra, and Abuja resulted in over 65 deaths, drawing widespread criticism of President Tinubu’s administration. Many Nigerians linked the fatalities to hunger and poverty.

However, the government under Mr. Tinubu rejected claims that the country’s economic hardship and hunger were factors contributing to the deadly stampedes at the Christmas palliative distribution venues.
