Stop Enabling Sexism, Weaponizing State Power Against Senator Natasha – Oby Ezekwesili Tells Tinubu

Oby Ezekwesili, the former Minister of Education has condemned Bola Tinubu’s administration for what she described as a blatant abuse of state power aimed at silencing Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, one of only four women in the Nigerian Senate.

Ezekwesili accused the government of enabling sexism by colluding with powerful figures to suppress serious allegations of sexual harassment made by the senator against the Senate President.

Ezekwesili labeled the criminal charges filed by the Federal Government against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan as “grossly irresponsible, illegal, and irrational,” warning that the action undermines democracy and the rule of law.

She demanded that Tinubu should immediately instruct the Attorney General to withdraw the frivolous charges by June 3 and called for an end to the ongoing harassment of the senator.

The former minister also urged the Tinubu to direct the Inspector General of Police to investigate 12 petitions filed by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan over fears for her safety in the past three months.

Ezekwesili further demanded the reinstatement of the senator’s security detail, which was reportedly withdrawn on the Senate President’s orders—a move she condemned as retaliation and an abuse of power.

Oby Ezekwesili’s strong public rebuke highlights wider issues of gender injustice and political intimidation in Nigeria.

Her call to action serves as a crucial demand for accountability, transparency, and protection of women who dare to speak out against powerful men in the country’s political landscape.
