You Claim to Fix Roads, Bridges But Owe Health Workers—Striking Doctors Blast Wike

The Federal Capital Territory’s (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has come under fire from striking resident doctors for failing to maintain health facilities and the welfare of employees in Abuja, the country’s capital.

George Ebong, the president of resident doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), stated on Channels Television on Wednesday that although Wike has been busy repairing roads, he has neglected government-owned medical facilities in the capital, many of which are in appalling condition.

“That’s just where we have our concerns. The minister has been very busy with projects, fixing roads, and all of that. We feel that he should also focus on the hospitals right now.

“We feel that we are the human abandoned project. No matter the things he does by fixing roads and bridges, the hospitals are the very first point of innovation and rehabilitation. They are hallowed ground; he cannot neglect them,” he said.

According to the DAILY POST, the physicians launched a three-day warning strike on Wednesday over unpaid salaries and benefits, among other issues, following the expiration of a previous three-week ultimatum.

Activities in Abuja’s government hospitals, including those in Wuse, Asokoro, Maitama, Kubwa, Zuba, Kwali, Abaji, Nyanya, and others, were grounded by the event.

Ebong claims that hospitals lack medications, doctors occasionally lack electricity to function, and there is a shortage of personnel.

He bemoaned the fact that certain hospitals in Abuja were run by just one doctor.

According to Ebong, despite putting in a lot of effort and taking on the duties of four or more people, many doctors have not received their six-month pay.

“I urge the minister to please try to ensure that all the wages are paid. I urge the minister to please visit all the hospitals and see the state in which the hospitals are at the moment,” he said.
