The incident occurred at his private residence in the Oke-Odo area of Tanke, Ilorin, the state capital.
Sources within the university community revealed that the student had been struggling with financial difficulties.
His father passed away a few years ago, leaving his mother, a retired schoolteacher, solely responsible for his education.
His financial struggles reportedly worsened after resuming school last year.
In response, his colleagues had pooled funds to help cover his tuition and provide food.
However, despite their efforts, he reportedly consumed a poisonous substance last weekend, shortly after his roommate left for lectures. A note he left behind expressed his distress over his financial situation.
His roommate discovered the incident upon returning from class and raised the alarm.
