Renowned broadcaster, Oseni Rufai has shared a startling anecdote from Nigeria’s golden years. Speaking about the nation’s decline in quality of life, Oseni recounted a story told to him by elderly friends who attended the prestigious University of Ibadan between 1967 and 1970.
According to Oseni, students once took to the streets in protest—not over poor infrastructure or rising fees—but because ice cream was removed from their daily menu.

“Nigeria was once a good country ooo. I was recently speaking to some elderly friends that went to University of Ibadan between 1967-1970 and they told me, they once protested because they removed ice cream from their very rich diet.
“They told me how they had chicken and other lovely meals in the University of Ibadan,” Rufai tweeted.

The story highlights just how far the country has shifted economically and socially. At the time, Nigerian universities—especially those like UI—were among the best in Africa, well-funded and internationally respected. Students enjoyed meals that rivaled restaurant offerings, scholarships that covered full tuition and stipends, and learning environments that attracted global lecturers.
In contrast, today’s university students often face overcrowded hostels, strikes, underfunded labs, and cafeterias with minimal offerings. Oseni’s story serves as both a historical insight and a critique of Nigeria’s current trajectory.
