Sultan Crisis: “The Sultan Must Be Jealously Guarded,” Shettima Blows Hot

Vice President Kashim Shettima has issued a strong warning to the Sokoto State government against any attempts to remove the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, from his position.

Speaking at the North West Peace & Security Summit in Katsina State, Shettima emphasized that the Sultan is more than just a monarch, describing him as an institution that represents an important idea for the nation.

Shettima’s comments came after the Executive Director of the Muslim Rights Council (MURIC), Prof. Isiaq Akintola, raised concerns over a plot to depose the Sultan. Akintola claimed that Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu had already removed 15 traditional rulers for various offenses and might be planning to do the same to the Sultan.

“Nigerian Muslims will not accept any move to depose the Sultan,” Akintola stated, urging the government to reconsider any such plans.

Addressing the summit, Shettima directly spoke to the Sokoto State officials present. “To the deputy governor of Sokoto, I have a simple message for you: Yes, the Sultan is the Sultan of Sokoto, but he is much more than that; he represents an idea, he is an institution, that all of us in this country need to jealousy guard, protect, promote, preserve and project for the growth of our nation,” Shettima declared.

Shettima further highlighted the significant role traditional rulers play in the country’s development. “In all developmental issues in this country, His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, I want to use him as a point of reference to recognize and appreciate all our royal fathers present here,” he said.
