Christian Genocide: Islamic Cleric, Gumi Tells Tinubu Over Trump’s Military Threat —Summon Ambassador, Cut Ties With US

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has urged Bola Tinubu to immediately summon the United States ambassador to Nigeria following recent military threats issued by former US President Donald Trump as a result of Christian genocide allegations in the country.

Gumi, reacting on Sunday, said Nigeria must not remain silent in the face of what he described as “a disrespectful affront” to the country’s sovereignty.

Trump had, in a public statement, threatened possible military action in Nigeria over what he claimed to be a “Christian genocide” taking place in the country.

Responding to the development in a Facebook post, he condemned Trump’s comments and called on Tinubu to take firm diplomatic action.

“For Trump to threaten a sovereign country with military attack is a profound disrespect to our authority, but we can rise above it,” Gumi wrote.

He added that Tinubu should summon the US ambassador to explain the threat and, if necessary, cut diplomatic ties with Washington.

“President Tinubu should summon the US ambassador; they either retract their threats or we sever diplomatic ties with this irresponsible regime,” he stated.

The Kaduna-based cleric also argued that Nigeria has other global partners it can explore for trade and security cooperation.

“There are lots of other options for our economic expansion and military alliance,” he said.

Gumi’s remarks come amid widespread criticism of the US move to redesignate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged religious persecution.
