In a surprising turn of events, Nigeria’s Super Eagles managed to secure a 1-1 draw against Lesotho in the first game of the World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Thursday. The Super Eagles created numerous chances throughout the game but were unable to capitalize on them. Taiwo Awoniyi missed a golden opportunity in the first half, while Jamilu Collins and Kelechi Iheanaho also came close to scoring.

However, it was Lesotho who broke the deadlock in the second half, taking a shock lead eight minutes after the restart. Motlomelo Mkwanazi, in a stunning display, headed the away side in front from their first corner of the game. The Crocodiles’ bench erupted in celebration, storming the pitch to rejoice with the goalscorer.

In response to the unexpected setback, Nigeria redoubled their efforts, applying pressure in search of an equalizer. Coach Jose Peseiro made strategic substitutions, bringing on Moses Simon and Terem Moffi for Ademola Lookman and Taiwo Awoniyi.

The tactical change paid off nine minutes later when Moses, who had added more bite to the attack, won a corner. Ajayi capitalised on this opportunity, heading in a powerful shot that saved Nigeria from a disastrous start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
