Again, Terrorists Storm Benue Community, Kill Two Soldiers, Others

Four people, including two soldiers, have been killed in a fresh attack by terrorists in some communities in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

A soldier is also reportedly missing following the attack, according to a local leader.The attack, which occurred on Thursday, January 18, 2024, targeted the communities of Abugbe, Okokolo, Ugboju, Odugbeho and Olegobidu, which had been previously threatened by the armed herdsmen.

The attackers were said to have crossed over from neighbouring Nasarawa State with sophisticated weapons.The attack also left several people injured, including the Commander of the soldiers deployed to the area.

Many villagers have fled their homes and sought refuge in nearby towns, fearing further violence.

The lawmaker representing Agatu State Constituency, Hon. Godwin Edoh, confirmed the attack and condemned the incessant attacks on his people by the herdsmen.

He called on the security agents and the state government to intervene and bring the culprits to justice.

He also sympathised with the families of the victims and urged the people of Agatu to remain calm and vigilant.

This is the latest in a series of attacks by suspected herdsmen on communities in Benue State, which have claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands of people in recent years.

The state government enacted a law banning open grazing of cattle in 2017, but the law has been met with resistance and violence by some herdsmen groups.
