President Samia Suluhu Dissolves Tanzania Electric Supply Company Due to Power Crisis

Tanzania

In response to escalating public frustration over regular power cuts, Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan disbanded the board of directors of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) on Thursday.

At present, Tanzania is grappling with power rationing due to a decrease in power production. This decline is attributed to insufficient water levels in dams and necessary repairs to the electrical infrastructure.

It’s reported that a combination of maintenance problems and water shortages, exacerbated by climate change, have led to a deficit of 400 megawatts.

As the main electricity supplier in the country, Tanesco is tasked with fulfilling the growing energy needs of both industries and households.

However, the ongoing issue of power rationing has prompted the president to take the severe action of dissolving Tanesco’s board of directors.

Reports indicate that Major General Paul Kisesa Simuli, the previous board chair, has been appointed as Tanzania’s ambassador to Uganda. In his place, Dr. Rhimo Nyansaho, the director of business development at Azania Bank, has been named the new board chair.
