Reports indicate that a clash between commercial motorcyclists, known as Okada riders, and members of a task force in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, has resulted in the death of at least two individuals.

A viral video circulating on social media platform X (Twitter) captured scenes of motorcyclists blocking the Okpanam road axis and the Midwifery area of Asaba on Monday to protest against the reported killings.

The protesters, visibly angered by the situation, took to the streets, blocking roads in the area. Police officers deployed to the scene allegedly resorted to opening fire amidst the escalating tensions.

In response to the incident, Bright Edafe, the police spokesperson in the state, affirmed in a post on X that the protest occurred on Monday morning.

Edafe explained that the protesters were engaged in a dispute with the task force, which ultimately resulted in the tragic loss of two lives.

“There was a violent protest this morning by Okada riders who had an issue last night with the state task force that led to the death of two persons,” he said.

“They mobilized in their numbers this morning, destroying properties and beating people, hence our men were deployed to control the situation before it turned into something else,” he added.
