By January 2024, the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) in Kaduna, Nigeria, will begin requiring teachers to complete a one-year teacher internship programme.
During a press conference held in Abuja in conjunction with World Teachers’ Day 2023, Prof. Musa Maitafsir, Director General of NTI, made this announcement.
It was reported that for those with certifications in the education field such as NCE, B.Ed., PGDE, M.Ed., and PhD, the internship will be required and will last one year. The goal of the programme is to familiarise the “trainee teachers” with the real-world application of the teaching and learning process.
The National Teacher Education Policy (2014)’s Section ‘C’ sub-section (1) is in accordance with this initiative. “Every new teacher shall be registered by the TRCN after at least one year of successful internship and mentoring to qualify for a licence,” it says. “After graduation from any teacher education programme.”
The trainees will obtain a “Teacher Internship Certificate” after successfully completing the programme, which will entitle them to TRCN “Induction and Certification.” This programme would not, however, apply to those who have already received their certifications from TRCN and have been admitted as prospective teachers.
