Terror Financiers Under Scrutiny, Cannot Be Tried In Public – House Defence Committee Chair

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Defence, Hon. Jimi Benson, says individuals financing terrorism in Nigeria cannot be publicly tried due to national security considerations.

He stated that both local and international actors involved in funding violent groups are currently under close scrutiny by security agencies.

Benson made the disclosure while speaking on the Prime Time programme on ARISE Television, where he addressed concerns over recent attacks recorded in parts of the country.

According to him, the Federal Government has intensified efforts in recent times to identify, monitor and disrupt the financial networks sustaining terrorist organisations.

He added that although significant progress has been made, revealing the identities of the financiers at this stage could compromise ongoing operations.

“The public cannot know who they are because of security,” he stressed, noting that exposing sensitive details prematurely could undermine the work of intelligence operatives and jeopardise national security.

The lawmaker assured Nigerians that the government remains committed to combating terrorism on all fronts and urged the public to maintain confidence in the capability of the nation’s security architecture.

He reiterated that ongoing investigations are yielding results and that every individual found culpable will face justice in accordance with due process.
