Muhammadu Saad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has said that it will take decades to resolve terrorism and insurgency in the region.

Speaking at the North-West Peace and Security Summit in Katsina State on Monday, the Sultan highlighted the urgency of addressing these security challenges.

“We must challenge these terrorists because we all know the devastating consequences of terrorism and insurgency on our lives.

It will take decades to overcome these issues, if at all we manage to do so,” Abubakar stated, underscoring the long-term impact of these threats.

The Sultan affirmed the readiness of traditional rulers to partner with security agencies and the seven governors of the geopolitical zone to “save our region from the numerous problems” caused by terrorism and insurgency.

He expressed optimism that the summit would yield effective proposals to significantly reduce insurgency, allowing people to resume their lives and businesses without fear.

The summit saw the attendance of Kashim Shettima, who represented Bola Tinubu; former President Muhammadu Buhari; governors of the seven states in the North-West geopolitical zone; service chiefs; and the Inspector General of Police.

Over the past decade, banditry has surged in Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kano, and Jigawa as a spillover from the persistent Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East.

Thousands of vulnerable individuals have been killed or displaced by these violent marauders, who often disguise themselves as herders.

The AK-47-wielding terrorists have also kidnapped a large number of people for ransom, spreading across the North-West and into the North-Central regions.

Despite efforts by various levels of government to use non-kinetic approaches, these measures have failed, allowing terrorists to continue driving farmers from their lands and significantly disrupting the country’s food production.
