Popular Nigerian comedian Acapella has joined the growing chorus of public outrage over what many described as an unnecessary and insensitive display during Tinubu’s condolence visit to Benue State, where children were seen standing in the rain to welcome the president.
Reacting to the viral footage showing schoolchildren drenched while singing the national anthem along the road, as well as the feasting and festive decorations that accompanied Tinubu’s visit, Acapella took to X on Wednesday to express his anger.
“A president visiting a tragedy site? All this ceremony for what exactly?”
“Sometimes I feel like these politicians struggle to OutDumb Each other,” he wrote, adding,
“After the president leaves, parents will fall back to treating their kids from cold. God Abeg Na.”
The viral videos have sparked criticism across social media, with many Nigerians questioning why the government would subject children to such treatment in the name of political optics. While dozens of families continue to mourn the killing of hundreds in the state, the streets of Makurdi were lined with branded posters and banners hailing Tinubu’s visit—an act many say shows misplaced priorities.
Critics argue that the elaborate ceremony not only missed the tone of solemnity required for a condolence visit but also exposed children to harsh weather conditions without consideration for their health.
The comedian’s post gained attention among online users who share his frustration with the performative nature of Nigerian politics. Others pointed out that such gestures have become standard practice for government visits, regardless of the human cost involved.
