Things Are Hard —Gospel Singer Nathaniel Bassey Urges Wealthy to Consider Poor Nigerians

Renowned gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey has made a heartfelt plea to wealthy Nigerians, urging them to support those facing severe hardship during these challenging economic times.

In a shared video, Bassey recounted a recent encounter with a well-dressed elderly man searching for food in a trash bin—a moment that deeply impacted him.

The singer described seeing the man, who appeared to be a respectable staff member on an estate, rummaging through a large trash bin typically used for waste collection.

“I see an elderly man fiddling with a dustbin outside, you know, that huge dustbin that the trash vehicle takes away. And I just said to him, ‘Oga, why are you scattering the dustbin?’ Then he looks at me… This is not a madman, but a well-dressed, coordinated man, likely a staff member of the estate.

“Then he’s bringing out foodstuffs—some egg rolls and chicken we couldn’t finish. I go closer and ask, ‘So, what are you using it for? Is it for a dog?’ He replies, ‘Oga, I want to eat; it’s my food… packs of juice, maybe things someone didn’t finish.’”

Bassey shared that he was moved by the man’s plight, offered him money for a proper meal, and felt deeply saddened. “He walked away, and I broke down crying,” he revealed, adding that he plans to assist the man further. This incident, Bassey noted, highlights the severe hardships many Nigerians currently face.

He also addressed Nigerians feeling discontent over luxuries, saying, “For those of you complaining that your own stress is not having enough money for a vacation, or that you didn’t fly first class but had to fly business class… or that God has failed you because a contract didn’t go through.

“Maybe you’re angry you didn’t get a visa, a promotion, or the bag you wanted, or because your testimony hasn’t happened yet. But I want to remind you that the man I saw this morning only asked to be allowed to take trash from my dustbin—trash that could potentially harm him. And he was willing to thank me for it.”

Bassey concluded, “This is a lesson in gratitude. If you have food to eat in these times, never forget to give God thanks.”
