Thousands of people rallied in support of Burkina Faso’s ruling junta on Wednesday, days after the military authorities said they had uncovered a “plot” to overthrow the government.
Demonstrators gathered at a central square in the capital, Ouagadougou, carrying giant posters of junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traore and Burkinabe and Russian flags.
They also held placards bearing slogans such as: “Down with imperialism and its local lackeys” and: “Full support for President Ibrahim Traore and the people of Burkina Faso.”

The National Coordination of the Civilian Vigil (CNAVC), a coalition of pro-junta civil society groups, called the demonstration.
“We, peoples who love justice and sovereignty, affirm our unwavering solidarity with the heroic struggle of the Burkinabe people for their emancipation,” a CNAVC spokesman said.
In a post on X, Traore thanked the demonstrators for their support for the vision for a new Burkina Faso and a new Africa.

He wrote, “I would like to express my gratitude to all the peace-loving, freedom-loving patriots and pan-Africanists who rallied around the world on Wednesday April 30, 2025 to support our commitment and our vision for a new Burkina Faso and a new Africa, free from imperialism and neo-colonialism.

“Your active solidarity and this demonstration of sympathy strenghtens our conviction that the fight we are waging for a fairer and more equitable world is justified.”
He asserted that the junta “will never bend our backs in the face of adversity; we will stand firm until our peoples are truly emancipated. With you, we are certain that victory over the forces of evil is at hand.

“Together, in solidarity, we will defeat imperialism and neo-colonialism for a free, dignified and sovereign Africa”, he added.
