Tinubu Congratulates Liberians for Credible Election, Lauds Weah for Accepting Defeat

In a recent address at the 64th ordinary session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Chairperson Bola Tinubu extended his congratulations to the Liberian people for conducting a presidential election that was free, fair, and credible. He also lauded President George Weah for his commendable acceptance of electoral defeat.

Tinubu praised Weah’s exemplary leadership throughout the electoral process, noting that his gracious acceptance of defeat and congratulation of his opponent set a standard for politicians in the region and beyond. He invited the summit’s leaders and participants to join him in a standing ovation for President Weah.

He stated, “I would also like to seize this opportunity to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the people of the Republic of Liberia for the successful conduct of the presidential election, widely adjudged to be free, fair, and credible.

“Let me also commend my brother and colleague, His Excellency George Weah, for his exemplary leadership and conduct throughout the electoral process.

“By accepting defeat and congratulating his opponent, President Weah has left a legacy to be emulated by politicians in our region and beyond,” he said.

Tinubu also acknowledged former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who demonstrated a similar commitment to democratic principles in 2015 when he lost his re-election bid to opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari.

He further urged his regional counterparts to prioritize good governance and collective prosperity as crucial tools for preventing unconstitutional changes of government in the region.
