Amid Lagbaja’s Death Rumour, Tinubu Appoints Oluyede Acting Chief Of Army Staff

Bola Tinubu also known as T-Pain has appointed Major General Olufemi Oluyede as the Acting Chief of Army Staff.

The announcement came in a statement from presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga on Wednesday.

Onanuga clarified that Oluyede would take on the role temporarily, pending the return of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who was earlier remoured to have died.

The statement read, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has appointed Major General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as the acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS).

“Oluyede will act in the position pending the return of the indisposed substantive Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja.”

Before his current appointment, Oluyede served as the 56th Commander of the elite Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army, based in Jaji, Kaduna.

Now 56, Oluyede shares a longstanding professional bond with Lagbaja, as both graduated from the Nigerian Defence Academy’s 39th Regular Course and were commissioned as officers in 1987.

Oluyede achieved the rank of Major General in September 2020. His distinguished career spans a variety of command positions, starting as a Platoon Commander and Adjutant at 65 Battalion, then advancing to Company Commander at 177 Guards Battalion, and later as a Staff Officer at the Guards Brigade, culminating in his role as Commandant of the Amphibious Training School.

Oluyede has contributed to multiple critical operations, including the ECOMOG Mission in Liberia, Operation HARMONY IV in Bakassi, and Operation HADIN KAI in Nigeria’s Northeast, where he commanded the 27 Task Force Brigade.

Throughout his service, Oluyede has earned numerous honors, including the Corps Medal of Honour, the Grand Service Star, and distinctions for completing the Staff Course and the National Institute, underscoring his dedication and accomplishments across various military roles.
