PFN Urges Tinubu to Declare State of Emergency on Security

Tinubu Folds, Removes Niger’s Sanctions

In a significant move towards regional diplomacy, Nigeria has decided to reopen its land and air borders with the Republic of Niger, alongside lifting various sanctions imposed on the country. Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the Chief, announced the decision in compliance with the recent resolutions of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

The ECOWAS extraordinary summit held on February 24, 2024, in Abuja witnessed a crucial decision to lift economic sanctions against several West African nations, including Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea. As a consequence, Nigeria promptly followed suit by lifting sanctions on Niger.

The directives from Chief Tinubu entail the immediate removal of the following restrictions imposed on the Republic of Niger:

  1. The closure of land and air borders between Nigeria and Niger, including the ECOWAS no-fly zone on commercial flights to and from Niger.
  2. Suspension of all commercial and financial transactions between the two nations, including the freeze on service transactions such as utility services and electricity.
  3. Asset freezes on the Republic of Niger in ECOWAS Central Banks and commercial banks, encompassing state enterprises and parastatals.
  4. Suspension of Niger from financial assistance and transactions with key financial institutions, particularly EBID and BOAD.
  5. Travel bans on government officials and their families traveling between the two nations.

Furthermore, Chief Tinubu has given his nod to lift financial and economic sanctions imposed on the Republic of Guinea.

This decision marks a significant step towards fostering regional cooperation and solidarity among ECOWAS member states. By aligning with the collective decision of the regional bloc, Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to promoting peace, stability, and economic prosperity in West Africa.

The move is expected to facilitate smoother cross-border trade and commerce, fostering economic growth and development in the region. It also underscores Nigeria’s pivotal role in advancing the interests of ECOWAS and upholding regional integration efforts.

As Nigeria takes strides towards regional integration and cooperation, the lifting of sanctions on Niger and Guinea signifies a new chapter of diplomatic engagement and collaboration within the ECOWAS community.

The decision comes amidst ongoing efforts by ECOWAS member states to address various challenges facing the region, including security threats, economic instability, and political tensions. By extending a hand of friendship and cooperation to its neighbors, Nigeria sets a positive example for regional solidarity and unity.
