Human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi has criticised Chief Bola Tinubu, alleging that he is capable of fabricating a faction of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, in the same way he staged “fake bishops” during the 2023 presidential campaign.
Farotimi made the statement on Friday via his official X account, responding to a recent press release by Afenifere, which condemned allegations made by a factional President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Atiku Abubakar Isah, against the Tinubu’s son, Seyi Tinubu.
“I think you should remember that a man (Tinubu) capable of manufacturing bishops, should have little problem with creating an Afenifere caricature, which would do his bidding and perform circus tricks for him,” Farotimi stated. “The Afenifere to which I belong, has nothing to do with this.”

Earlier, Afenifere, in a statement signed by its National Organising Secretary, Abagun Kole Omololu, dismissed Isah’s claims as “salacious, fallacious, and completely unfounded.” The group accused Isah of acting on behalf of political opponents and warned against using student platforms to spread misinformation.
Afenifere also questioned Isah’s legitimacy as NANS president and described his public display of a banner featuring opposition figures—such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Minister Rotimi Amaechi—as evidence of political bias.
According to the group, the allegations against Seyi Tinubu are part of a broader “proxy war” targeting the President and his family, orchestrated by a coalition seeking power through underhanded means.
“These tactics are going beyond descent and civilised politicking,” Afenifere concluded.
