He’s Unyielding to Injustice — Tinubu Renames National Theatre After Wole Soyinka

Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the National Theatre in Iganmu, Surulere, to The Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts.

The decision was made to commemorate the 90th birthday of Wole Soyinka on July 13, 2024.

Wole Soyinka, a globally celebrated playwright, novelist, poet, essayist, actor, singer, composer, and documentarian, is a prominent advocate for good governance and a fair society.

Tinubu Renames National Theatre After Wole Soyinka

In 1986, Soyinka became the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. He has also received numerous other prestigious awards, including the Benson Medal from the Royal Society of Literature, the Academy of Achievement Golden Plate Award, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the Europe Theatre Prize’s Special Prize.

In a statement by his spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu praised Soyinka as one of the finest minds of his generation, embodying the highest standards of human enlightenment while remaining steadfast against injustice, oppression, and base impulses.

Tinubu lauded Soyinka’s contributions as a pro-democracy champion and a vocal critic of corruption and maladministration over several decades.

Tinubu stated, “I am, accordingly, delighted to have the honour to announce the decision of the Federal Government to rename the National Theatre in Iganmu, Surulere, as The Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts.”
