It’s Sad Tinubu Sent His Wife to Washington to Lie, Cover Up Christian Genocide in Nigeria — US Lawmaker Smith

A United States lawmaker, Rep. Chris Smith, has criticised Bola Tinubu for sending his wife to Washington DC to refute and cover up Christian genocide in Nigeria.

He made this statement in a video post shared by an X user, John-Ezeakolam.

Recall that Oluremi Tinubu, attended the U.S. National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., where U.S. President Donald Trump publicly acknowledged her, praising her as a “very respected woman” and noting her role as a Christian pastor.

During her visit, she also spoke in Washington and explained that Nigeria’s security challenges are complex and not accurately defined as intentional persecution or genocide against Christians. She said that framing Nigeria’s insecurity as genocide was “propaganda to an extent.

Smith stated it was “deeply troubling” that Tinubu would deploy his wife to downplay what he called well-documented atrocities against Christian communities, particularly in the Middle Belt and northern parts of the country.

He accused Nigerian leaders of maintaining a “culture of denial” and described the First Lady’s comments as a cover-up of mass killings, church attacks, and forced displacement suffered by Christians.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) further confirmed the claim by citing report of over 4,000 Christians killed in Plateau, Benue, and Kaduna states since January.

While the Nigerian government maintains that insecurity affects all communities regardless of faith, Smith insisted that refusing to acknowledge the religious dimension of the violence undermines justice for victims and delays meaningful international intervention.

He called on the U.S. government and global partners to look beyond official narratives and pay closer attention to on-the-ground evidence from affected communities, warning that denial, he said, “only emboldens the perpetrators and deepens the suffering of innocent Nigerians.” #Remi#Tinubu
