Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to Enugu was celebrated by the state government, with Governor Peter Mbah hosting him to commission various projects.
However, SaharaReporters’ findings revealed that many of these projects were either incomplete or not as significant as presented.
For example, the projects included a re-asphalted junction and an unfinished Smart School building. The patrol security vehicles, which had already been given to the police and other security agencies, were recalled for display at the government house just for the Tinubu’s visit.
Other than the International Conference Centre (ICC)—which was started by Mbah’s predecessor, Chimaroke Nnamani, and completed with minor work still ongoing—there were not many noteworthy projects. At the Government Technical College (GTC), Enugu, where the construction of a Smart Green School displaced thousands of students, only one building was completed and commissioned by Tinubu, while the rest of the classroom blocks were still under construction.
A source at the commissioning stated, “What is happening in Enugu is the more you look, the less you see. All the patrol vehicles given to the police and security agencies were recalled to the Government House for show. At the GTC, only one classroom block was completed, while several others are still under construction, yet the president was brought in to commission it as a completed project.”
Governor Mbah had earlier announced plans for substantial spending on education infrastructure in the 2025 budget, including funding for the construction and equipping of smart schools across the state.
However, critics, such as Chief Raymond Nnaji, a former PDP national auditor, expressed disappointment with the lack of meaningful achievements. He criticized the media for amplifying the state government’s actions, claiming they were “dangerous to democracy.”
The Enugu State government defended the commissioning of the projects, stating that the GTC Smart Green School was a symbolic event, and the resurfaced Bisala-New Heaven road junction represented 90 resurfaced urban roads in Enugu City.
Additionally, the government emphasized the symbolic commissioning of 150 patrol vehicles equipped with AI surveillance cameras.
