“Tinubu’s Government Has Become More Oppressive, Insecure Than Abacha’s Military Rule” Says Odinkalu

Prominent human rights lawyer and public affairs analyst, Chidi Odinkalu, has compared the Tinubu-led government to the late Sani Abacha’s military dictatorship, describing the current administration as even more repressive and insecure.

Odinkalu made the remarks on Sunday while reacting to a flier shared by the family of the late military ruler on the 27th anniversary of his death. The flier, which has since gone viral, bore the bold inscription: “General, Nigeria is worse than you left it.”

Backing the family’s statement, Odinkalu wrote on his official X account: “27 yrs after the death of Gen Sani Abacha, his family commemorates his death by reminding the world that @NigeriaGov run by the man who claims to have advocated against Abacha’s dictatorship is today more dictatorial & more insecure than the one the General ran. #ThisLife….!”

The tweet has drawn wide attention, with many online users concurring with Odinkalu’s claim, especially in light of worsening insecurity, economic hardship, and the shrinking space for dissent under Tinubu’s leadership.

Odinkalu’s comment is especially striking, as Tinubu has long been seen as a symbol of resistance against military authoritarianism during the 1990s. But according to the former NHRC chairman, those democratic credentials have now been betrayed.
