Following former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s criticism of Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), netizens have drawn parallels between Tinubu’s administration and the military rule of the late General Sani Abacha.
Atiku had alleged on his Twitter handle that Tinubu and the APC were systematically harassing, intimidating, and dismantling the opposition in a bid to establish a one-party autocracy.
He warned that at the current pace, the government might soon resort to incarcerating all critics.
Reacting to Atiku’s remarks, several Nigerians took to social media to express concerns over what they described as increasing authoritarian tendencies under Tinubu’s leadership.
One notable comment read: “Tinubu’s government is heading towards the Abacha era.”
This comparison to Abacha’s regime, known for its brutal suppression of opposition and widespread human rights violations, has sparked debates over the state of democracy and political freedoms in Nigeria.

Many critics argue that recent arrests and prosecutions of opposition figures, including activist Omoyele Sowore and Professor Usman Yusuf, point to a shrinking democratic space. Others believe that the government’s approach to dissent is a dangerous sign of growing intolerance.
