Henry Shield and Tinubu

If Tinubu Succeeds in His One-Party State Agenda, He Will Become Life President Over Nigeria—Henry Shield Raises Alarm

Hon. Henry Shield, Head of Mission, Leadership & Accountability Initiative, has warned that Nigeria could fall under a single-party system if Bola Tinubu’s political agenda succeeds and that the agenda would make Tinubu Nigeria’s life president.

Shield wrote on his official X account that “if Tinubu succeeds in his one-party state agenda, he will become a life president over Nigeria.”

He added that Nigerians are free to dismiss the warning as a conspiracy if they choose.

The post sparked widespread reactions online from users who said Nigeria’s democracy is deteriorating under Tinubu’s rule.

A commenter identified as Ansem Edet argued that citizens and opposition figures have failed to mount the kind of resistance Tinubu himself showed when the PDP dominated political power.

A user under the name Delta State Mayor warned that Nigeria is already slipping into a de facto one-party state driven by defections, pressure tactics and the weaponisation of political institutions.

He wrote that the pattern of sudden defections by governors and political heavyweights has raised concerns about coercion, threats and federal influence.

He added that the trend threatens national stability and weakens public trust in democratic checks and balances.

Another user, Isaac Umoh, questioned whether any senator would be willing to reject a third-term request if Tinubu made such a move.

Comrade Iba Monso suggested that Nigerians are depending on Peter Obi to galvanise national resistance against political capture.

A commenter known as Paul referenced a recent incident in Lagos where a local government chairman was replaced with the son of a political strongman and said the country has seen similar patterns before.

Gabriel claimed that the situation in Lagos and Rivers reflects broader attempts to consolidate power across the federation.

Some users, such as Niyi Lekan, dismissed the warnings and argued that defections are common in Nigerian politics.

Others maintained that Tinubu may not become a life president but could entrench himself to control who becomes the next leader.

Another user identified as Ebi Ojokojo warned that extremist elements within the ruling circle stand to benefit if the one-party agenda succeeds.

Raul argued that the plan may fail because Tinubu is surrounded by individuals who are driven by greed and personal ambition.
