Tragedy Strikes Niger and Benue: Over 20 Killed in Brutal Attacks

A wave of violence has engulfed communities in Niger and Benue states, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. In Niger State, the Madaka community in the Rafi Local Government Area was targeted by armed bandits, resulting in the deaths of over 20 individuals, including two monarchs and the vigilance group commander.

Eyewitnesses recounted the horrors of the attack, describing how the bandits descended on the community, indiscriminately firing weapons and setting houses and shops ablaze. Despite the brutality of the assault, there was reportedly no immediate response from security forces, allowing the assailants to operate unchecked for hours.

The District Head of Madaka, Isah Bawale, confirmed the scale of the tragedy, revealing the extensive damage inflicted upon the community. Meanwhile, residents expressed frustration over the lack of police presence, lamenting the vulnerability of their communities to such attacks.

In Benue State, the Yongia Uambie Tiev community fell victim to a similar onslaught, with armed herders launching multiple attacks over two consecutive days. The assaults, which claimed the lives of seven individuals, were characterized by the attackers’ use of sophisticated weapons and their brazen disregard for human life.

Community leaders and local officials condemned the attacks, highlighting the urgent need for security reinforcements to protect vulnerable populations. Efforts to reach authorities for comment were met with limited success, as the police spokesperson failed to provide details on the incidents.

Amidst the escalating violence, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has taken action by deploying additional mobile policemen to the troubled areas of Benue State. The deployment, initiated at the request of the state governor, aims to bolster security and restore calm to the affected communities.

The Chairman of Apa Local Government, Ochayi Alidu, welcomed the deployment of the police unit, acknowledging the swift response of both the state government and Chief Bola Tinubu. With tensions running high and communities reeling from the devastation wrought by the attacks, residents are hopeful that the increased security presence will bring a semblance of peace and stability to the region.
