A heartbreaking incident unfolded on Thursday along the Onitsha-Asaba bridgehead, claiming the life of an unidentified woman and leaving two others injured after an articulated truck collided with pedestrians.

According to an eyewitness, the accident occurred due to brake failure as the driver descended the River Niger bridge en route to Asaba. The driver lost control of the vehicle (truck), resulting in it plowing into pedestrians along the roadside.

Confirming the incident, C. A Iyiegbuniwe, the Staff Officer for Public Education of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Anambra, stated, “The crash occurred today, April 4, 2024, at about 3:20hrs along Onitsha-Asaba Bridgehead. It involved an articulated white and green Mercedes Benz vehicle with registration number NKE25LG. The vehicle had a brake failure and rammed into people. Two persons were injured and one female was killed.”

Upon arrival at the scene, FRSC personnel swiftly transported the injured to Toronto Hospital, Onitsha, while the deceased was taken to Toronto Mortuary.

Expressing condolences to the bereaved families, Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, the Sector Commander RS5.3 Awka, emphasized the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and adherence to traffic regulations.

Irelewuyi urged motorists to prioritize vehicle upkeep and comply with traffic laws to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
