Trump Campaign Gets $50m Boost from Single Donor

Donald Trump’s presidential campaign received a significant boost of $50 million (£39.5 million) from conservative billionaire Timothy Mellon, according to a federal filing on Thursday.

The Super-PAC fund “MAGA Inc” reported to the Federal Election Commission that it collected over $68 million from donors last month.

Reuters revealed that Mellon, an heir to the Pittsburgh-based Mellon banking family, contributed $50 million, while another $10 million came from billionaires Liz and Dick Uihlein.

US media noted that Mellon made his donation the day after Trump was convicted on 34 charges of falsifying business records related to his New York hush-money trial.

Mellon has also been the largest donor to independent presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr., contributing at least $20 million to the pro-Kennedy Super-PAC American Values.

Super-PACs are independent “political action committees” that can raise unlimited funds to support election candidates.

Mellon’s donation has enabled pro-Trump allies to outspend those supporting US President Joe Biden in recent weeks.

Mellon, a Wyoming resident and amateur pilot, has invested in and led various transport-related companies. Forbes estimates the Mellon family’s net worth to be around $14.1 billion.

Meanwhile, Reuters reported that billionaire Mike Bloomberg has donated nearly $20 million to Biden-supporting Super-PACs, including $19 million to the independent pro-Biden group Future Forward (FF PAC) and $900,000 to the Biden Victory Fund, a coalition of the Biden campaign and Democratic Party committees.

The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

On Thursday, the pro-Kennedy Super-PAC reported it received around $280,000 last month, with none of it coming from Mellon.
