Trump Restores Stricter Citizenship Test, Raises Bar For Immigrants

The Trump administration has announced the return of a stricter naturalization civics test, raising the bar for immigrants seeking American citizenship.

The updated exam expands the pool of questions from 100 to 128, requiring applicants to correctly answer 12 out of 20. The current system only asks 10 questions, with six correct answers needed to pass.

Officials say the change is part of a broader review of the citizenship process, aimed at ensuring applicants have a deeper knowledge of U.S. history, government, and English.

Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the move reflects the administration’s commitment to making sure “anyone who becomes a citizen fulfils their obligation to their new country.”

However, immigrant-rights advocates have pushed back, arguing that the policy is designed to discourage naturalisation and impose ideological barriers.

Jennifer Ibañez Whitlock of the National Immigration Law Centre described the move as “hollow,” accusing the administration of praising citizenship while making it more difficult to obtain.
