Donald Trump announced on Thursday that, if elected president, he would appoint billionaire Elon Musk to lead an audit of government spending and implement “drastic” reforms.
Trump stated that, following Musk’s suggestion, he would establish a “government efficiency commission” to conduct a comprehensive financial and performance audit of the entire federal government, with the Tesla CEO heading the initiative.
Speaking to the Economic Club of New York, Trump, known for his bold claims, suggested the effort could save “trillions of dollars.”
“This commission will develop an action plan to completely eliminate fraud and improper payments within six months,” Trump stated.
Musk who previously stated he voted for Democratic candidates has since aligned himself with Trump, particularly after an attempted assassination of the former president at a rally in July.
Musk has a history of conflicts with regulators, including the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which mandated oversight of his Twitter posts after his 2018 tweets were labeled “false and misleading” by the agency.
Additionally, Musk’s initiatives, like his push for autonomous driving technology, continue to face scrutiny from government agencies.
