Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on Monday and swiftly took action by signing several executive orders.
Among them was an order titled “Return to In-Person Work,” dated January 20, 2025, which mandates an end to remote work for federal employees.
The order directs the heads of all executive branch departments and agencies to terminate remote work arrangements and require employees to return to their duty stations on a full-time, five-day-a-week basis as soon as practicable.
The memorandum includes provisions for exemptions, stating:
“Heads of all departments and agencies in the executive branch of Government shall, as soon as practicable, take all necessary steps to terminate remote work arrangements and require employees to return to work in-person at their respective duty stations on a full-time basis, provided that the department and agency heads shall make exemptions they deem necessary. This memorandum shall be implemented consistent with applicable law.”

President Trump’s prioritization of this issue aligns with his previous remarks.
In December 2024, he made it unequivocally clear that his administration would impose strict limits on remote work, signaling his intent to return federal operations to a traditional in-office framework.
