Trump Withdraws US From 66 International Bodies and Treaties

The White House says President Donald Trump has signed a memorandum that authorizes the withdrawal of the United States from 66 international organizations, conventions and treaties.

The memorandum was signed on Wednesday. The list of organizations includes 31 United Nations entities.

Trump says he has directed all executive departments and agencies to take immediate steps to effectuate the withdrawal of the US from the listed organizations.

He claims it is contrary to the interests of the US to remain a member of, participate in, or otherwise provide support to the organizations on the list.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and the UN Population Fund are among the listed organizations.

The Tokyo-based UN University and the UN Human Settlements Programme, or UN-Habitat, whose Asia-Pacific regional headquarters is in western Japan’s Fukuoka, are also listed.

International bodies that promote democracy and the rule of law are included as well.

The White House says that removing the US from the organizations will enable Trump to save taxpayer money and refocus resources on America First priorities.
