Two men lost their lives while trying to clear a diesel reservoir on Saturday night in Kano, the state fire service has confirmed.
The incident happened along Katsina Road by the Baban Gwari roundabout in Fagge Local Government Area, according to a statement issued by the fire service spokesperson, Saminu Abdullahi, on Sunday.
The statement identified the victims as Philip Osando, 40, and Philip Emmanuel, 35, who worked at a diesel depot.
The statement said that the fire service received an emergency call from a police officer, Inspector Abubakar Surajo, at about 8:20 p.m. on Saturday and dispatched its rescue team to the scene at about 8:27 p.m.
It said that the victims had entered the diesel reservoir to clear the tank in preparation for receiving diesel, but they suffocated and could not come out.
The fire service personnel retrieved the bodies of the victims and handed them over to the police, who took them to the hospital, where they were confirmed dead.
The statement urged the public to be careful and think before doing anything that could endanger their lives.
“Safety is for everyone; think before you do anything to avoid any unforeseen circumstances”, Mr. Abdullahi warned.
