Two staff members of the Israeli embassy were shot dead on Wednesday night near the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington D.C., United States.
The victims, a man and a woman, were attacked at approximately 9:05 p.m. local time as they exited an event at the museum.
Authorities have identified the suspect as Elias Rodriguez, a 30-year-old from Chicago, Illinois. He is currently in police custody. Witnesses reported seeing the suspect pacing outside the museum before he approached a group of four people, drew a handgun, and opened fire.

Washington Police Chief Pamela Smith stated that Rodriguez chanted “free Palestine” while in custody.
Yechiel Leiter, Israel’s ambassador to the U.S., confirmed that the victims were a young couple who were soon to be engaged.
“The young man purchased a ring this week with the intention of proposing to his girlfriend next week in Jerusalem,” he said.
“They were a beautiful couple.”
Tal Naim Cohen, spokesperson for the Israeli embassy, expressed confidence in U.S. law enforcement “to apprehend the shooter and protect Israel’s representatives and Jewish communities throughout the United States”.
U.S. President Donald Trump condemned the killings on Truth Social, calling them an act of antisemitism.

He stated, “These horrible D.C. killings, based obviously on antisemitism, must end, NOW! Hatred and Radicalism have no place in the USA.
“Condolences to the families of the victims. So sad that such things as this can happen! God Bless You ALL,” he added.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the agency is collaborating with local police and will provide updates as the investigation progresses. He urged the public to pray for the victims and their families.
