A tragic battle on Sunday between the Iraqi army and Kurdish Peshmerga forces has resulted in the deaths of two people. Among the dead were a fighter from the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and one Iraqi soldier.
According to Reuters, security sources in Iraq and the Kurdistan region claim that the fighting occurred in a mountainous region to the north. When fighters from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) abandoned positions close to Makhmour on Saturday and turned them over to the Iraqi army, the situation became more tense.
On Sunday, though, Peshmerga soldiers from Iraq’s governing Democratic Party (KDP) made an effort to reclaim the positions. This action set off the conflicts that tragically resulted in the deaths of people.
Concerns about the rising tensions in the area have been raised by the occurrence. In order to prevent more deaths, it is anticipated that both parties will be able to come to a peaceful agreement.
